Abstract

The development of science and technology, while offering efficiency and convenience, also entails potential risks and disasters, demanding reflection on its socio-ethical responsibilities and a transformation in science education. Grounded in this awareness, this study theoretically explores the concept of ‘placeness’ to seek new directions for science education aimed at fostering ‘responsibility ethics’ in the age of science and technology. First, by examining the historical-philosophical evolution of ‘place,’ it introduces a relational perspective that understands place not as a fixed entity but as a dynamic network of intertwined human and non-human actors. Second, focusing on ‘artificial objects’ created by science and technology as key elements of contemporary places, it illuminates their role and co-constitutive relationship with humans through Actor-Network Theory (ANT). Third, this study argues that such an understanding of relational placeness demands a ‘responsibility ethics’ that transcends anthropocentrism in relationships with all entities, including artificial objects. The human role is thus reinterpreted not as one of dominating the network but as acting and coordinating with special responsibilities, akin to a ‘guest conductor’ in an orchestra. Consequently, this research proposes that science education should recognize the link between relational placeness and responsibility ethics. It should guide students to engage in the ‘labor for placemaking’—a process of reflecting on ethical ways of relating with artificial objects and creating sustainable places. This will contribute to fostering responsible citizenship among learners navigating the age of science and technology.
