Abstract
This study is one of the basic studies that deeply deal with the essence of ‘science research’ required in science teacher education. This study analyzed the meaning of ‘research’ contained in discussions related to research for teachers. And based on this, we explored the essence and direction of science research for science teachers. Specifically, this study (1) analyzed the characteristics and limitations of discussions related to ‘science research for teachers’ contained in existing RET, and (2) sought new ‘science research for teachers’ that can overcome these limitations. The results of the study are as follows. First, there are two major types of research for teachers. They are ‘Following Scientists (SciRes)’ and ‘Focusing on One’s Own Inquiry (SciPed)’. First, Following Scientists (SciRes) has a high barrier to entry and the problem of difficulty in conducting independent inquiry. Meanwhile, Focusing on One’s Own Inquiry (SciPed) was developed as a way to overcome these problems. However, ‘Focus on one’s own inquiry (SciPed)’ has limitations in that it does not provide sufficient explanations for the following fundamental questions: (1) What is the basis for including a learning element (i.e., the formation of new understanding for individuals) in science research, even if it does not create new knowledge that does not exist in the scientific community? (2) In addition, what is the ‘nature of science’ that underlies this new RET concept? (3) In what ways can the new RET be closely connected to (the implementation of) the school science curriculum? In this study, we proposed a new type of science research called ‘science research based on the practices in science’ and attempted to answer three fundamental questions. This is the result of our research in the initial stage and should be continuously reviewed and developed through future research.
