Abstract

The winning-or-nothing philosophy has been the most important value in Judo since Judo was included in the Olympic games as a competitive match rather than a martial art. Judo has long been known as a martial art to defend oneself by utilizing his/her opponent's attacking movement as well as to protect the opponent from serious hurts. However, winning in contests and getting awards becomes everything for Judo contestants nowadays. Not only elite Judo contestants in tournaments but also Judo learners in educational fields pursue the win-at-all-cost philosophy. The purpose of this study was to review philosophies of Jigoro Kano, Pierre de Coubertin, and John Dewey, and to find out implications of their philosophies with respect to the sport and art of Judo. The role of Judo coach as an educator was illuminated at the end.
