Abstract

This paper focuses on the seated Śākyamuni statue in Hakubunji Temple, which was established by the Japanese Government-General of Korea during the colonial period to commemorate Itō Hirobumi. It analyzes the case of the Government-General utilizing a Buddhist statue as a political monument. Hakubunji was a temple built on Namsan Mountain in Seoul in 1932, and its main statue, the seated Śākyamuni, was created by Takamura Kōun in 1933. This article suggests the possibility that the Government-General intended to exalt Itō as a ‘great man’ comparable to Kusunoki Masashige through Kōun's Buddha statue, and argues that Hakubunji was a place where the connection between Itō and Masashige was embodied. It also discusses the nationalistic role played by Japanese Buddhism at the time and the patriotic ideology that Kōun represented through his Buddhist statues. Unlike a figure in bronze, the Buddhist statue of Hakubunji was not directly exposed to the public but was revealed in a limited manner inside the temple, continuously exerting its ideological effect through repetitive rituals and media reports. Various memorial services and ceremonies held at the temple, centered on the statue, served to justify Japan's wars of aggression and to internalize the emperor-centered nationalist ideology within Korean society. This statue, erected as an alternative to the originally planned bronze statue, justified colonial rule in a more subtle way than a bronze statue would have. Through the Buddhist statue, Hakubunji could function as an imperialistic symbolic space that commemorated Itō's ruling achievements and emphasized the integration of Japanese and Korean Buddhism.
