Abstract

This article examines the process of the Jangchungdan established in the Korean Empire period and transformed into a park by the invasion of Japan and the Parkmunsa Temple built in the park. The Jangchungdan, which was established in order to sacrifice the people who gave their lives for the country, was transformed into Jangchungdang Park during the Japanese colonial rule. The process of erecting the temple in the park was not only the destruction of the cultural heritage of the country. This is a representative example of colonial rule. Jangchungdan was a place of festivals established in 1900 by King Gojong, but in October 1909 it was rapidly transformed from the memorial ceremony of Ito Hirobumi. It was in the early 1920s that Jangchungdan was lost to its original function at the time of its establishment and it was built as a park. The process in which Jangchungdan changed into a park during the Japanese colonial period was a way of colonial rule over Japan through the park. In October 1932, Park Mungsa Temple, which commemorates Ito in Jangchungdann Park, was built and the original appearance of the temple was almost hidden. Imitating Limjaeseonsa Temple in Taiwan, Japan built Parkmunsa Temple and emphasized the harmony of Choseon and Japan. The establishment of Parkmunsa Temple can be regarded as the application of a colonial rule that completely governs the spirit of the Korean people. Pakmunsa Temple built in the park shared the function of Jangchungdan Park rather than the original function of the temple and became isolated as a temple.
