Abstract
Justice-Oriented Science Education (JOSE) is an educational approach that seeks to recognize the value of justice in the process of learning and teaching science, and to translate that recognition into practice. It is closely aligned with the 2022 revised Korean science curriculum’s emphasis on problem solving through scientific inquiry and active participation as democratic citizens. However, in the context of Korean science education, there has been limited exploration of how JOSE has been implemented and how it might be realized in practice. As a result, teachers and researchers attempting to enact JOSE in real-world settings may find its feasibility and effectiveness unclear. This paper introduces the core concepts of JOSE and acknowledges the diverse interpretations and positions that exist regarding its meaning. It conceptualizes JOSE through three philosophical lenses—epistemology, ontology, and axiology. First, it discusses an epistemological approach to JOSE, which critically examines how scientific knowledge systems and inquiry processes intersect with justice. Second, it proposes an ontological approach, which considers how students’ lived experiences, identities, and knowledge are respected and made visible within science learning spaces. Third, it explains an axiological approach to JOSE, which emphasizes the pursuit and realization of socially significant values through learning and using science. Drawing on domestic and international research cases relevant to each of these perspectives, the paper explores the practical applicability and implications of JOSE. It also identifies tasks necessary to expand JOSE discourse and support its implementation in the Korean educational context.
