Abstract

During the Reformation of the sixteenth century, Germany had a space to apply the reformed thoughts that originated in Switzerland just like a pilot project among the traditional feudal lords and Electors, while meeting the borders of the Catholic or Lutheran regions. The Reformation of the Palatinate was cultivated in an open field on the political and diplomatic structure of the Holy Roman Empire, and was gradually progressing through the incubation period of Pre-Reformation. The period between the Augsburg Interim (1548) and the Peace of Augsburg (1555) was decisive in the Palatinate Reformation. Otto Henry (reign as Elector: 1556-1559) accepted Lutheranism, when he poorly invited the Gnesio-Lutherans and reformed thinkers without consideration, leaving the seeds of conflict. From the period of Frederick III, new Elector of the Palatinate, who was nourished with the Reformed faith, came to the throne (1559 Feb.), there was already a conflict between Heidelberg's Gnesio-Lutherans and Reformed theologians as Klevitz in Heidelberg University. To resolve the theological conflicts, Frederick turned to Melanchthon for his advice. Melanchthon's "Judgment (Iudicium de Controversia Coenae Domini)" for arbitration was written on November 1, 1559 and sent to Elector the Palatinate to suggest the direction of resolution (published on 9 September 1560). Melanchthon's interpretation of breaking bread in the sacrament in “judgment” was quoted from 1 Corinthians 10:16 as a participation(koinonia) in the body of Christ, and came close to the sacramental theory of the Reformed theologians. However, after the death of Melanchthon (1560.4.19.), facing a doctrinal vacuum in its leadership, the Palatinate became to head to a theological view of Switzerland. Calvin of Geneva received a letter with the data from Heinrich Bullinger and made a direct theological intervention in the Reformation of the Reformed theology, publishing a writing (1561) criticizing the Gnesio-Lutheran Heshusius that caused the tough controversy in the Palatinate. Between 1558 and 1561 the above historical upheavals took place, putting the Palatinate on the basis of the Reformed theology. On this background, the Heidelberg Catechism, which began in 1562 by Elector of the Palatinate, was published in 1563. It was translated and spread throughout the whole Europe. The Palatinate became the pivotal place of the international Calvinism. Therefore, the development of the Reformed Reformation in the Palatinate in the sixteenth century should be recognized in the multilateral contexts of the political situation of the Holy Roman Empire, the divisions and conflicts between Gnesio-Luterians and the followers of Melanchthon, and the interaction with the Reformed camps, such as Bullinger and Calvin, in Switzerland.
