Abstract
This article introduces Zwingli’s doctrine of the Eucharist ex- pressed in the letters to his fellow reformers before and after the Marburg Colloquy, and traces the meaning of his doctrine of the Eucharist. The different theories of Eucharist between Luther and Zwingli provided a clue to the division of the Protestant forces, causing the irreversible split with Lutheranism and Zwingli’s Reformed Protestant Church. As a result, the Eucharist emerged as a clear theological theme that distinguished Zwingli from Luther, and the two different doctrines of the Eucharist became the criterion for distinguishing Lutherism and Zwinglianism. Even if Zwingli could not overcome the theological differences, he did not give up the unity of the Protestant forces. He actively supported the values of the Protestants and the Protestant Alliance. Zwingli argued that the doctrine of the Eucharist was an important doctrine for the unity of the Protestant forces against the Holy Roman Empire, which accepted Catholic ideology. He insisted that Lutherans and Zwinglians should unite for the Protestant Reformation. Zwingli failed to convince Luther through the Marburg Colloquy and the Zwingli’s reformed church was subsequently excluded from the Diet of Augsburg. Zwingli’s influence was reduced. He was eventually killed in the second of the Kappel Wars against the Swiss Catholic Canton in 1531. However, his doctrine of the Eucharist was inherited through Calvin und the doctrine of the Eucharist of the Reformed Church was established.
