대개 종교개혁은 국제적 연결고리를 제외하고 다루어지기 때문에 그 다층적 면에 주목할 필요가 있다. 16세기 종교개혁 상황이 국제적으로 어떻게 연결되어 있는지 알기 위해서 위그노와 독일 개신교 제후들의 관계를 추적하는 것은 좋은 방법이 된다. 왜냐하면, 1560년대 프랑스 내부의 갈등은 팔츠 개혁파의 등장으로 복잡해진 독일 내 개신교 상황과 시기적으로 프랑스 위그노와 맞물려 있기 때문이다. 따라서 이글은 제국내 개혁파가 등장하는 독일 개신교 상황을 이해하되 그 국제적 관계와 상황을 이해하기 위해서 팔츠의 종교개혁 상황, 개혁파의 등장, 그리고 제국 안과 밖의 개혁파가 어떻게 연결되는지 살피려고 한다. 이 모든 일의 중심에 팔츠 선제후 프리드리히 3세가 있다. 그의 의미가 단순히 신성로마제국의 황제를 선출하는 선제후라는 신분으로서 위그노 지지자였다는 점에만 있지 않다. 즉, 제국 내에 그와 같은 고위 신분이 개혁신앙의 지지자로 있다는 사실이 위그노에게 실질적 힘이 되었다는 점에만 있지 않다. 그 외에 제국의 이전 개신교는 오직 루터파만을 지칭했으나 프리드리히 3세가 개혁파를 받아들인 후 제국에는 개혁파와 루터파 두 종류의 개신교가 있음으로 인해서 독일과 위그노의 관계가 복잡해진다는 점에서도 프리드리히 3세는 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 종교개혁을 국제관계 안에서 더 다층적으로 이해하기 위해서 선제후 프리드리히 3세를 중심으로 팔츠의 개혁파의 등장, 위그노 전쟁 및 팔츠의 참전, 프리드리히 3세의 위그노 지지 활동에 초점을 맞춘다.
Abstract
The Reformation is often studied in isolation from its international connections, so its multilayered aspects need to be more noticed. To understand how the Reformation was connected internationally in the 16th century, it is useful to trace the relationship between the Huguenots and the German Protestants. The internal conflicts in France in the 1560s coincided with the Empire's Protestant situation being complicated by the rise of the Palatinate reformed Reformers. Therefore, this article will examine the rise of the Reformed in the Palatinate and the connections between the Reformed within and outside the Empire in order to understand the international relations and context of German Protestantism. At the center of all this is the Elector of the Palatinate, Friedrich III. His significance lies not simply in the fact that he was a Huguenot supporter as Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, meaning that the presence of such a high-ranking supporter of the Reformation within the Empire was a real boost for the Huguenots. Friedrich III is also significant in that his embrace of the Reformed complicated German-Huguenot relations because while previously Protestantism had only referred to Lutherans, there were now two kinds of Protestants in the Empire. In order to provide a more layered understanding of the Reformation in international relations, this article focuses on the rise of the Reformed in the Palatinate, the outbreak of the Huguenot Wars and the Palatinate's involvement, and Friedrich III's support of the Huguenots.
