The purpose of this study is to examine whether current Korean-Englishdictionaries provide users with sufficient entry information and accessible entrystructure for productive activities. As a way to achieve this purpose, this studychose to analyze Korean-English dictionaries in comparison withJapanese-English dictionaries which have the strong historical impact on thedevelopment of Korean-English dictionaries. For comparison, two currently mostpopular dictionaries were chosen as representative of each country. Seven entriesfrom each dictionary were critically examined in terms of the sufficiency as well asthe accessibility of information in view of the most common purposes ofproductive dictionary use. Their distinguishing features and complementaryadvantages were also drawn. The analysis shows that the entry information fromthe Korean-English dictionary is less explicit and accessible than the Japanesecounterpart particularly when it comes to grammar patterns and meaningdifferences, indicating the need for improvement in terms of dictionary content andstructure in order to better help users' English production.
