The purpose of this study is to review current trends in developing English as a foreign language(EFL) dictionaries and research findings on the use of English dictionaries by EFL students, and to provide insights for further development of Korean as a foreign language(KFL) dictionaries. Up until the 1980s, it was argued that for effective English learning, English monolingual dictionaries should be used. Such an argument, however, has been shown to be groundless by empirical research on the use of dictionaries. Research findings indicate that definitions in English monolingual dictionaries, even though they are limited to 2,000 or 3,000 defining words, are not easy for EFL learners to understand. The learners prefer bilingual or bilingualised dictionaries to monolingual ones whenever possible. No evidence has been found to prove that monolingual dictionaries guarantee more effective learning. These findings has led major publishers of English monolingual dictionaries to bilingualise their titles. In light of the history of dictionary development for EFL learners, this paper suggests that several points need to be taken into consideration when developing Korean dictionaries for KFL learners.
