Abstract

This study seeks to deepen the understanding of the thought and literature of Gongcho Oh Sang-sun (1893–1963) by examining the period from the late 1920s to the early 1930s―a decisive turning point in his life―focusing on its connection with modern Buddhism. Oh may be regarded as a figure who symbolically embodies the characteristics of modern intellectual life. Accordingly, the task of this research is not merely to conduct an author-centered study of his life and works, but to situate them within the broader intellectual landscape of modern Korea. Until his twenties, Oh’s life bore clear traces of his Christian background. After his studies in Japan, however, from around the age of thirty, he displayed a growing affinity with Buddhism. Yet to interpret this solely as a conversion or a fundamental shift of thought would be premature. When one examines this period in detail, one finds that it reflects the very traits and tendencies of the Korean intellectual world of modern times: a transcendent, boundary-crossing orientation that resisted attachment to any one doctrine, religion, or ideology. This orientation may be described as cosmopolitanism or a vision of universal brotherhood. Religiously, it often took the form of mysticism; philosophically, of anarchism; socially, of the new cultural movements that swept across the modern intellectual sphere. In this sense, the tendency to transcend boundaries constituted a dominant current of modern intellectual life, which Oh encountered and actively embraced during his years of study in Japan. Such an orientation was not bound to nation, state, doctrine, or “isms,” but sought a breakthrough toward new forms of life precisely by transcending such boundaries. Oh lived as a cosmopolitan, and both his boundary-crossing life―moving freely across nation, state, and religion―and the imagery of ruin and wandering in his literary works must be understood against this background.
