Abstract
This paper examined in detail the term ‘곤조(Gonjo)’, which originates from the Japanese word ‘根性(Konjō)’. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the term ‘곤조(Gonjo)’ was first documented on April 30, 1927. Second, although three different spellings were used from the 1960s to the 1980s, the spelling was standardized to ‘곤조(Gonjo)’ in the 1990s. Third, the term ‘곤조(Gonjo)’ was originally used to describe the bad temper or aggressive attitude of individuals belonging to certain professions or criminal groups. However, since the 1980s, its usage has broadened and it has come to be used to describe individual personality traits as well. Fourth, although the Japanese word ‘根性(konjō)’ carries both positive and negative connotations, Korean speakers adopted only the negative meaning when using the term ‘곤조(Gonjo)’. Additionally, while the Japanese word ‘根性(konjō)’ is used solely as a noun, Korean speakers use ‘곤조(Gonjo)’ not only as a noun but also in verb-like expressions from a grammatical standpoint. While it is certain that ‘곤조(Gonjo)’ originates from the Japanese word ‘根性(konjō)’, Korean speakers have selectively and diversely adapted its meaning and grammatical usage. This reflects the fact that Koreans did not passively accept loanwords from Japanese, but rather actively adopted and adapted them.
