Abstract

This paper examines the background, strategy and nature of the Charles Bradlaugh-Annie Besant trial in 1877 within the framework of the discourse on population issue. The trial began when Charles Bradlaugh and Annie Besant were charged with publishing Fruits of Philosophy which contained birth control. Considered one of the Victorian ‘sensational trials’, the case illustrates how difficult conventional perspective of birth control, pregnancy, childbirth, the role of women, the life of working class was to break. Above all, the fact that Bradlaugh and Besant continued to sell Fruit of Philosophy through the establishment of Freethought Publishing Company even at risk was part of the strategy to change prejudice and negative perceptions about birth control. Besant’s argument in Court during the trial drew public attention, and this interest led to vivid media coverage. In this process, the press played a major role in publicizing issues such as private and intimate pregnancy, childbirth, and sexuality. In Short, The Knowlton trial was an attempt to extend the issue of birth control beyond the moral realm of individual and family to gender equality and further to the imperial level, as well as a resistance movement to Victorian womanhood.
