Abstract

This essay explores the feature of “The Men and Women's Club” to talk about Victorian sexuality in Britain of the 1880s. The Men and Women's Club shifts from the public discussions of sexual danger to the semiprivate debates of a discussion club of freethinking men and women, who were intent on exploring the history and future possibility for heterosexual relations. The aim of the club was to present an ideal heterosexuality to the Victorian public. A dialectic between sexual possibility and sexual danger revealed different attitudes towards masculinity and feminity, especially towards heterosexuality, on the part of men and women of the professional middle class. Over its four-year life span the club discussed a host of topics: form the position of women among early Indian Buddhists, women of old Russia and sex relations among the Romans through to more contentious and comtemporary considerations of the sex instinct, morality, marriage, prostitution, family limitation and women's emancipation. Although these issues were programed for the improvement of the women's situation, men's voice became much influential in debates. Women's voices were always refused in the end of debates within the club. This essay also explores the inequality of club discourse between female and male members.
