Abstract
Honneth’s theory of recognition interestingly was able to turn into a more productive social pathology through serious reactions to the criticism that it was insensitive to repressive power structures and distorted recognition: Through the concept of “recognition as ideology”, Honneth shows that the possibility of distorted recognition can be discussed within the framework of his general recognition theory. The dual structure of ideological recognition can be better explained by the concept of a “second-order-disorder” that was presented by Christoph Zurn. Honneth accepts this concept and make correct diagnosis that this disorder also plays a central role in the pathologies of individual freedom. However, Honneth still remains in the problematic position that everyone in a sick society feels pain, which does not appear to be consistent with the concept of second-order-disorder. Furthermore, Honneth does not mention the risk that the absolutization of abstract rights could make people disregard the weak position of the counterpart under the guise of legal equality.
