무시의 부정의로부터 비규정성의 고통으로 - 악셀 호네트의 두 차례의 헤겔 전유의 시도에 대한 고찰

호네트의 비판이론은 헤겔의 사유를, 그것도 두 번에 걸쳐 전유하는 가운데 체 계적으로 형성되었다. 호네트의 이 두 차례의 헤겔 전유의 작업 중 첫 번째 것은 이미 한국의 연구자들에 의해 충분한 주목을 받아왔던 것으로 그의 초기작 『인정투쟁』에서 전개된 것이고, 두 번째 것은 중기작 『비규정성의 고통』에서 본격화된 것으로서 이에 대한 국내 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 이 두 저작에서 호네트는 전혀 다른 두 가지 사회적 부정성을 대상으로 삼되, 흥미롭게도 이를 주체들에 의해서 체험되는 ‘고통’으로 의미화하여 다룬다. 즉 『인정투쟁』에서 호네트는 청년 헤겔의 실천철학적 문헌들에 나타난 인정 구상을 설득력 있게 재해석함으로써, ‘정의의 제도를 완비하지 못한 나쁜 사회’에서 주체들은 타인에 의해 부당하게 ‘무시되는 고통’에 쉽사리 노출될 수 있지만, 이 고통을 겪는 당사자들은 “불의의 느낌”이라는 도덕적 감정에 힘입어 자기실현에 필요한 물질적, 상징적 자원의 올바른 재분배를 촉구하는 인정투쟁에 임할 수 있음을 강조한다. 반면에 『비규정성의 고통』에서 호네트는 헤겔의 성숙기 저작인 『법철학』을 본으로 삼아, ‘정의의 제도가 완비되었을지라도 그것의 형식적 이념만을 절대시하는 메마른 사회’에서 주체들은 ‘주어진 자유의 권한을 적절히 활용할 수 없기 때문에 쉽사리 비규정성의 고통’에 노출된다고 진단한다. 그리고 이 고통은 타인의 곁에서 자기를 제한하는 인륜적인 상호주관적 관계를 통해서만 좋은 삶의 실현이 가능하다는 반성적 각성을 불러일으킴으로써 해방의 통로를 열어줄 수 있으리라고 전망한다. 호네트가 두 차례의 헤겔 전유를 통해 길어낸 이 두 고통 - 즉 무시됨 그리고 비 규정됨의 고통 - 으로부터의 해방은 각기 자기실현의 ‘소극적 필요조건’과 ‘적극적 충분조건’에 해당한다. 즉 전자의 차원에서 제기된 좋은 삶의 실현이라는 규범적 이상은 궁극적으로 후자의 차원에 이르러서야 완연하게 구현될 수 있기 때문이다. 호네트가 무시됨의 고통과 그로 인한 인정투쟁을 중심에 두었던 초기의 시대비판적 관심으로부터 차츰 비규정성의 고통과 그로 인한 인륜성의 재전유를 촉구하는 최근의 시대비판적 관심으로 이행한 까닭은 그 때문이다.
Abstract
Honneth’s Critical Theory has been systematically shaped by actualizing Hegel’s thoughts through twofold appropriation. His twofold appropriation of Hegel has been carried out in Struggle for Recognition and in Suffering from Indeterminacy. The first approach has already received much attention from Korean researchers of Honneth’s theory, while the second has hardly been the subject of investigation. In these two approaches Honneth criticizes quite different kinds of social negativities, which he interestingly semantizes as the ‘suffering’ experienced by subjects: In Struggle for recognition, Honneth has emphasized that while subjects in the unrighteous society are easily disregarded and suffer from the hindrance of self-realization, these subjects can, due to the moral “feeling of injustice”, take the struggle for recognition and request a right distribution of material and symbolic resources for self-fulfillment; in the suffering of indeterminacy, in which he tries to reactivate Hegel’s Philosophy of Right, Honneth diagnosticates that subjects in a dry society, in which the just institutions are formed, but only adhered to their formal ideas, suffer from indeterminacy because they didn’t adequately use the given rights of liberty. But according to Honneth this suffering of indeterminacy allows access to liberation insofar as it makes the subjects reflectively realize, that a good life is only possible through the ethical and intersubjective relationship with the others. If the deliverance from the first kind of suffering (i.e. from disregard) corresponds to the minimum requirement for self-realization, the liberation from the second suffering (i.e. of indeterminacy) is the maximum requirement. The normative ideal of the realization of the good life, which is initiated in the former dimension, can only be fully realized in the latter. Therefore, after the conceptualizing the struggle for recognition caused by the suffering of disregard, Honneth shifts once again to the second criticism urging the recuperation from the illness of unbonded Individuality.
