‘인정 관계’의 확대를 위한 연대와 교육 : 악셀 호네트(A. Honneth)의 ‘사회적 가치 부여’ 개념을 중심으로

프랑크푸르트학파 3세대 철학자인 악셀 호네트(Axel Honneth)는 사회의 구성원들이 어떠한 수치심도 없이 공적공간에 현시될 수 있을 정도로 충분히 자아존중, 자유, 독립성 등을 누리는 그런 사회를 이상적인 사회로 규정한다. 그는 자신의 이러한 주장을 헤겔과 미드의 이론을 분석함으로써 『인정투쟁: 사회적 갈등의 도덕적 형식론』을 통해구체화한다. 호네트는 인간이 사회 안에서 자기 정체성을 형성하고 나아가 주체로서 자신을 드러내기 위해서는 ‘사랑’, ‘권리’, ‘사회적 가치 부여’라는 인정 관계를 통해 긍정적인 경험을 쌓을 수 있어야 한다고 주장한다. 하지만 오늘날우리 사회에는 신체적 폭력, 권리 부정, 모욕 등과 같은 불의적인 인정 유보의 상황에 놓임으로써 긍정적인 자기관계를 형성할 수 없는 이들이 상당수 있다. 이런 이유로 호네트는 우리가 보다 나은 공동체를 지향하고 이를 구현해내기위해서 무엇보다 무시와 부정의한 인정 유보를 해결하고 도덕적 가치 규범으로서 인정 질서를 확보하기 위한 ‘연대’의힘을 강조한다. 연대란 사회적 가치 부여라는 인정 형식에 따른 것으로 호네트는 이를 두 가지 차원으로 제시한다. 하나는 개인의 업적과 개성에 대한 호소이며, 다른 하나는 인간으로서의 최소한의 재화와 기본 지위의 보장에 관한것이다. 호네트는 전자가 아닌 후자의 경우에만 사람들이 인간다운 삶에 대한 도덕적 인식과 공감을 통해 연대 의식을형성할 수 있다고 보았다. 이러한 호네트의 이론을 토대로 이 연구는 우리가 자기 영달과 자기도취적 안락만을 꾀하도록부추기는 경쟁 및 능력주의 시스템 하의 교육을 극복할 수 있는 혜안을 모색한다. 이로써 우리는 이것이 연대를위한 교육으로 자기도취적 안락을 경계하고 도덕적 지평을 확대할 수 있는 교육, 자유로운 삶의 토대를 마련하기위해 공적 행위와 판단을 가능케 하는 교육을 통해 가능하다는 점을 확인하게 될 것이다.
Abstract
Axel Honneth defines an ideal society as one where its members are self-respecting, free, and sufficiently independent that they are able to display themselves in public without feeling embarrassed. Through an analysis of Hegel and Mead's theories, he develops this argument in The Struggle for Recognition. Honneth states that, for a person to gain a sense of self in society and further reveal themselves as independent subjects, they must gain positive experiences through relationships of recognition, such as “love,” “right,” and “the granting of social value.” However, due to being subject to situations of unfair withholding of recognition, such as physical violence, denying rights, and insults, many people in our society today are not able to establish positive self-relationships. For this reason, Honneth stresses the power of solidarity that can be used to resolve the cases of neglect and unfair retention of recognition and to securely establish an order of recognition as a moral value norm to achieve a better community and implement it. According to Honneth, solidarity is based on the recognition form of assigning social value, which can be presented in two dimensions. One is an appeal for individual achievement and characteristics, and the other is about ensuring minimum goods and basic status as a human being. In Honneth's view, a sense of solidarity can be formed through moral perception and empathy for human life only in the latter case. With this theory in mind, this study explores measures to overcome the current educational environment under a competitive, meritocratic system that encourages self-success and narcissistic comfort. By doing so, we confirm that education for solidarity is possible through an education that expands moral horizons and guards against narcissistic comforts while enabling public action and judgment to lay the foundation for freedom.
