Abstract
In The Right of Freedom Honneth not only proposes the realization of individual freedom—achieved through the social institutions and practices immanent in modern society—as the normative standard for the social critique, but also critically analyzes how much these existing institutions and practices contribute to such freedom. However, when the normative standard for social critique is sought within specific existing institutions or practices, we cannot propose alternatives beyond them. To overcome this limitation, this paper distinguishes between two meanings of immanence: immanence as a general social principle essential to the formation and maintenance of society, and immanence as the specific institutions and practices embodying particular values in the present. The paper argues that these two dimensions of immanence need to be integrated in a relationship between the universal and the particular, the ideal and the real. To this end, the paper introduces the concept of “sociality” as a general social principle that concretizes itself into specific institutions of social freedom.
