Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate that Toegye Yi Hwang’s conception of Li (理) is not confined to a metaphysical principle or ontological foundation, but is deeply interwoven with the domain of human moral praxis. Toegye understood Li as the foundation of moral nature and emphasized the inseparability of Che (體) and Yong (用), thereby articulating a unified view of essence and function. For Toegye, the ultimate goal of moral practice was not found in abstract theorization, but in the concrete realization of dao-li (道理) within the lived and ordinary experience of the situated present, embodied through a mode of being as an ethical subject in relation to others. Central to this philosophical vision is the recognition that “my Li and your Li are not essentially different.” Rather than eliminating or absorbing difference, Toegye affirmed that beneath the diversity of individual existence lies a shared moral order. This perspective offers a compelling ethical vision of coexistence and respect for difference, one that resonates strongly with the challenges of contemporary pluralistic and multicultural societies Furthermore, in an era marked by rapid technological change and the growing presence of artificial intelligence, Toegye’s emphasis on self-cultivation, continuous moral effort, and a relational sensitivity that resists the instrumentalization of the other becomes all the more vital. His notion of Li is not a disembodied abstraction, but a lived and practiced ethical principle grounded in daily life and attuned to the moral demands of concrete situations. In this way, Toegye’s thought offers not only a historical account of Neo-Confucian moral philosophy, but also an enduring and generative philosophical resource. It illuminates pathways for thinking and enacting ethical life in a world where humans must coexist with diverse others be they human, natural, or artificial, and challenges us to embody the values of coexistence, ethical discernment, and the practical realization of shared moral insight.
