Abstract

This paper examines the philosophical commitments and the political stances of Yulbong Shin Hyun-jung, a scholar born in Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. Educated by his father at a young age and later by Ki U-man, a grandson of Nosa Ki Jeong-jin, Yulbong had natually committed to Nosa School’s Li-Centered Neo-Confucianism and to ‘Wijeongcheoksa(衛正斥邪)’ stance. This paper delves into Yulbong's Restoration strategy' and his perception of the West. His restoration doctrine, which fundamentally argues for reclaiming the nation, appears valid at first glance. However, the legitimacy of his approach, particularly his petitions to a dethroned king during the Japanese colonial rule, raises doubts. This paper offers a nuanced assessment of the proposed strategies for restoration as follows: First, the proposition to wear mourning clothes until the country is reclaimed as a sign of resistance against Japan is agreeable. However, the justification for this proposition - that 'we have received the grace of King Gojong for 44 years, thus we should wear the three-year mourning attire', typically reserved for one’s own parents - is questionable. Second, Yulbong's urging for compatriots to 'unify our hearts by the tens of millions and for those who have become officials under the Japanese colonial rule to resign and not cooperate with the Japanese' is highly persuasive. Yet, his petition to the Korean king, who had been dethroned by Japan, to abolish the veneration of family pedigrees and employ the virtuous is difficult to validate as timely. Third, advocating for the preservation of Confucian culture to revitalize Confucian customs as a driving force of resistance, aimed at strengthening 'national identity,' can be viewed positively. However, the fact that many citizens were beginning to willingly adopt Western culture at the time suggests that Yulbong's arguments might not have been compelling. Fourth, regarding Yulbong's "Parisian Documents," the efforts to strive for Korean independence by petitioning to the Paris Peace Conference suggests a positive outlook on his efforts for independence. Yet, recognizing that Western countries at the time were nations engaged in imperialistic colonial conquests raises doubts about the validity of his strategy. Finally, while Yulbong’s commitment to the ‘Eastern ethics-Western Technology doctrine(東道西器論)’ is praised for recognizing the necessity of adopting Western technology, this paper argues that such an approach's disregard for ‘the integration of substance and function(體用一源)’ is fundamentally flawed.
