Abstract
The purpose of this study aims to investigate the effects of board game-based environmental education on the environmental literacy of fifth-grade elementary school students. The program was designed to foster students' knowledge, emotional engagement, and behavioral intentions related to environmental issues. A total of 26 students from a fifth-grade class in an elementary school in Ulsan participated in the study. The program, consisting of several sessions using board games 'ARK' and others, the program focused on endangered animals, pollution, and sustainable practice. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed. A pre- and post-test design was used, applying an environmental literacy measurement tool developed by Nam et al. (2021), covering three subdomains: environmental knowledge, affect, and practice. Additionally, students' written reflections—categorized into “What I learned,” “What I felt,” and “What I want to know more about”—were qualitatively analyzed to explore cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in students' overall environmental literacy scores (t = -5.052, p < .001). Subdomain analyses also showed positive changes in environmental knowledge, affective response, and intention to act. Qualitative findings supported these outcomes, indicating deeper empathy toward environmental issues, heightened awareness, and increased willingness to engage in pro-environmental behavior. These findings suggest that board game-based environmental education can be an effective tool for promoting integrated environmental literacy in elementary school students. The study further highlights the pedagogical potential of experiential and game-based learning in fostering sustainable mindsets.
