Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide foundational data for the development of climate change education and invention education programs by examining the effectiveness of an invention education program designed for climate change adaptation in enhancing elementary school students' climate change literacy and creativity. To achieve this goal, a 12-session invention education program for climate change adaptation was developed and implemented with 22 third-grade students at D Elementary School over a two-week period. Pre- and post-tests measuring climate change literacy and creativity were administered, and the results were analyzed using an independent samples t-test. The findings of this study are as follows. First, participation in the invention education program for climate change adaptation had a significant positive effect on students' climate change literacy. Improvements were observed particularly in the areas of awareness and attitude toward both climate change and climate change adaptation. Second, the program also significantly contributed to the enhancement of students' creativity. In the domain of creative disposition, notable improvements were identified in imagination, self-confidence, and intrinsic motivation. In the domain of creative thinking, significant growth was observed in originality and elaboration. These results suggest that the process of recognizing the urgency of the climate crisis and the necessity of adaptation, through case studies on climate change, was effective in fostering climate change literacy. Additionally, the opportunity for students to independently perceive the need for invention and to generate ideas for climate change adaptation appeared to meaningfully cultivate their creativity.
