Abstract

The “Grand Language” discourse in China’s New Era functions as a complex linguistic mechanism through which state power fully engages in the processes of design, narration, reproduction, and internalization. This reveals that language is not only a core technology mediating the state’s governance structure but also a powerful tool of political control. For instance, slogans such as the “Chinese Dream,” the “Belt and Road Initiative,” “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics,” and “Moderately Prosperous Society” are not merely future-oriented catchphrases, but a collective ideological language system planned and operated by the ruling authority. This system restructures the collective consciousness of the people and the grand national narrative, acting as a linguistic-political mechanism to facilitate their internalization. To understand the operational mechanisms of the Grand Language, this study first analyzes its ontological characteristics through the concept of “utterance,” exploring the symbiotic relationship between language and power discourse. It then applies Roland Barthes’ concept of “myth” to examine the construction and expansion of an absolute symbolic space. Furthermore, it analyzes the “interpellation” narratives that summon the people into heroic, market-oriented, and state-centered subject positions, alongside their internalization, representation strategies, and the everyday reproduction of affective politics. Finally, by investigating platform-based dissemination and meaning-framing mechanisms within the context of digital socialism, the study reveals an advanced linguistic strategy of discourse governance combining technology and power. Ultimately, it defines the Grand Language discourse in the New Era as a central instrument for authoritarian governance, nationalist mobilization, and regime stability, proposing it as a critical framework for the study of political language and power in contemporary China.
