「소요유」와 「제물론」을 중심으로 본 장자 내편의 문맥 구조 ― 장자 사상의 정치철학적 가능성에 대한 탐구(2)

일반적으로 장자가 추구하는 자유는 탈속의 자유라고 말한다. 그러나 장자사상의 핵심이 담겨 있는 내편을 검토할 때 장자는 ‘사람 사는 세상’ 속에서의 진정한 자유를 갈망하는 것으로 보인다. 이런 사실은 장자사상에 대한 한층 정교한 독법을 요구한다. 그것은 바로 정치철학적 독법이다. 이 시각에서 접근할 때, 「소요유」와 「제물론」을 중심으로 한 내편의 문제의식은 새롭게 조명될 수 있다. 「소요유」는 바람직한 삶의 이상과 그 정치적 맥락 그리고 그것의 구현을 위해 요청되는 실천적 행위라는 주제로 문맥이 구성되어 있고, 「제물론」은 시작과 끝부분에서 만물의 평등성과 그것을 체화한 삶의 모습을 쌍괄식으로 제시하고 중간에서 그 타당성을 ‘언어-지식-담론’ 비판의 관점에서 논증해 가는 구조를 보인다. 내편의 나머지 편들 역시 이 같은 문제의식을 이어받는다. 사회화된 세상 보기 방식을 해체하는 데 필수적인 ‘자기 비움’의 단계를 생물학적인 차원으로까지 밀고 나가고(「양생주」), 그렇게 하여 ‘자기 변형’을 달성한 이의 관점에서 세상살이를 조언하고(「인간세」), 그 같은 인격이 결과적으로 이루어내는 정치적 효과를 묘사하며(「덕충부」), 나아가 이런 특성들이 종합된 인간상을 제시함으로써 자연적 존재와 사회적 존재라는 인간 삶의 양대 범주를 화해시키고(「대종사」), 마지막으로 그런 통치자에 의해 다스려지는 이상적 정치의 모습을 묘사하는 것(「응제왕」)이 그것이다. 장자사상에 대한 이러한 독법은 기존 질서의 ‘이름-자리’에 묶여있는 우리의 사회적 몸을 자기 본연의 상태로 되돌리는 작업에 풍부한 시사를 준다.
Abstract
It is commonly said that the freedom of Zhuangzi is freedom of unworldliness. However, when we examine the inner chapters of Zhuangzi, it seems that he longs for true freedom in the “In the World of Men”. This fact requires a more elaborated reading of Zhuangzi’s thought: a political-philosophical reading. When approached from this perspective, the inner issues centered on the “Free and Easy Wandering(逍遙遊)” and “Discussion on Making All Things Equal(齊物論)” can be newly illuminated. In this regard, “Free and Easy Wandering” is contextualized in terms of the ideal of a desirable life, its political context, and the practical acts requested for its realization. And “Discussion on Making All Things Equal” presents the equality of all things and the form of life that embodies it at the beginning and end paragraph, and argues its validity in the middle from the perspective of a critique of language-knowledge-discourse. The rest of the inner charpters also inherit this critical mind. It refers to the process of “self-emptying” that is essential for dismantling the socialized way of seeing the world to the biological level (“The Secret of Caring for Life[養生主]”), advocating world life from the perspective of those who achieved “self-transformation” (“In the World of Men[人間世]”), describing the resulting political effects of such personality (“The Sign of Virtue Complete[德充符]”) and presenting a human image in which these characteristics are combined, reconciling the two categories of human life: natural existence and social existence (“The Great anerable Teacher[大宗師]”) and finally describing the ideal politics governed by such a ruler (“Fit for Emperors and Kings[應帝王]”). This reading of Zhuangzi’s thought has rich implications for the interest in returning our social body, which is tied to the established “name-place” to its original state.
