Abstract
This paper revisits the discussion of Zhuangzi and freedom. The main argument is threefold. Maybe it is said that the modern originator of the interpretation of ‘absolute freedom’ in Zhuangzi’s the chapter, ‘xiaoyaoyou’(逍遙遊) is Feng Yulan(馮友蘭), who finds the basis for this interpretation in the description of the complete man in the chapter of xiaoyaoyou and the interpretation of Guoxiang(郭象), and does not associate ‘absolute freedom’ with the word, ‘xiaoyao’(逍遙). In other words, Feng Yuran interprets absolute freedom as a cosmological self by calling the ‘zhiren’(至人), ‘the perfect man’ or ‘the freeman.’ Therefore, it would be inappropriate or overinterpreted to interpret the idea of ‘xiaoyao’ as ‘absolute freedom.’ Secondly, it should be noted that the origin of the word ‘xiaoyao’ is Shijing, the Classic of Poem, not Zhuangzi. In addition, the word ‘xiaoyao’ appears in Zhuangzi as well as Chuci, the Songs of the South(楚辭), and the image of ‘xiaoyao’ in both texts is antagonistic. For example, the word, ‘xiaoyao’ in Chuci' means “wandering without a destination” and expresses the woe of the poetic self with the belief of loyalty, while that of Zhuangzi is a metaphor for the life of the subjective self, which is a laborious but leisurely life aimed at the world without monarchs. Third, when the modern Chinese scholars talked about freedom in relation to Zhuangzi in the 20th century, the predominant notion of freedom was primarily a metaphysical freedom that was close to the meaning of liberation or nirvana and quite distant from social and political freedom. Also, even insofar as it related to philosophical and personal freedom, ‘xiaoyao’ was a civil and passive freedom, reflecting the fate and condition of the 20th century intellectuals. On the other hand, the concept of freedom in the original text of Zhuangzi can also be interpreted as a more active and resistant meaning through words and actions of refusal. This is where we get a glimpse of the meaning of social and political freedom.
