해방인가 상징폭력인가: 부르디외의 '성찰적 사회학'에 대한 비판적 고찰

초록

이 논문은 피에르 부르디외가 꼴레쥬 드 프랑스 취임 강연에서 제시했던 “부정에 대한 부정”의 논리를 중심으로 그의 성찰적 사회학과 비판기획을 체계적으로 분석하고 비판적으로 평가한다. 부르디외의 성찰적 사회학은 이론가들이 부당전제한 인식론적 특권과 그러한 특권에 기반을 둔 진리주장을 행위자들에게 자의적으로 부과해온 전통적인 학자적 관점을 비판하고, 행위자들의 의미세계와 실천의 논리를 복권시키는 데 그 핵심적인 의의가 있다. 그러나 부르디외의 이론체계와 해방서사에 등장하는 행위자들은 일루지오에 과잉 강박되어 있기 때문에, 자기-해방의 조건과 경로를 스스로 부정하는 존재들이다. 부르디외는 프로이드 정신분석학의 “부정에 대한 부정”의 논리를 창으로 삼아 일루지오라는 방패를 뚫으려 했다. 하지만 부정에 대한 부정의 논리는 이론가의 인식론적 특권을 선험적으로 전제하는 것이기 때문에, 아이러니컬하게도 부르디외의 진리주장은 행위자의 자기 이해나 자기 판단과 상관없이 언제나 참일 수밖에 없다는 독단론에 빠지게 된다. 부르디외는 행위자들과의 소통과정에 대한 구체적인 이론적 시나리오를 공백으로 남겨둔 채, 자신이 갈고 닦은 창만은 행위자들의 통약불가능한 일루지오를 관통할 수 있다는 예외주의의 덫에 갇히게 된다. 이 논문의 핵심 주장은 부르디외의 수행모순, 즉 그 역시 자신의 성찰적 사회학이 그토록 통렬하게 비판한 전통적 이론가들의 상징폭력으로부터 결코 자유로울 수 없다는 것이다.

Abstract

This paper analyses systematically and critically Pierre Bourdieu’s “Reflexive Sociology” and his own version of “critical theory”, especially focusing on the logic of “The Negation of Negation”, delivered on his inaugural lecture at the Collège de France, “A Lecture on the Lecture.” Consistently having enunciating reflexive praxeological sociology through his life works, Bourdieu has severely criticised the scholastic point of view, tacitly or overtly, for assuming the epistemologically privileged position of theorists and imposing arbitrarily their alleged truth claim on the social actors. However, the social actor featuring in Bourdieu’s liberating narrative is so obsessed by illusio that obstinately negates his/her own authentic condition and path of self-liberation. According to Bourdieu, his critical theory as a spear can readily break through the social actors’s illusio as a shield on the ground of Freudian psychoanalytic logic, “The Negation of Negation.” But, this paper argues that, according to the negation of negation, regardless of the actor’s judgement, Bourdieu’s narrative is always true, ironically. In other words, a prior, the negation of negation presuppose the privileged truth value of Bourdieu’s narrative. This paper criticizes Bourdieu’s Exceptionalism in that Bourdieu has never explicitly demonstrated how his laboriously constructed spear can penetrate also his laboriously constructed shield, that is, incommensurability of the lay person’s illusio, without committing the same symbolic violence of unreflexive traditional theorists criticized by himself.
