부르디외 사회학은 커뮤니케이션 현상에 대한 새로운 사유를 자극하는 개념 도구와 논쟁적 주장을 담고 있다. 특히 언어 문제에 관한 부르디외의 성찰은 그의 초창기 작업에서부터 이론적이면서도 경험적인 방식으로 꾸준히 나타난다. 이 글에서는 부르디외의 저작들에 폭넓게 나타나 있는 그의 언어관에 대해 비판적으로 고찰해보고자 한다. 우리는 부르디외의 언어관을 세 단계에 걸쳐 논의할 것이다. 우선 첫 번째 단계에서는 부르디외가 언어학자들의 ‘언어중심주의’를 어떻게 공격하고 또 해체하는지에 초점을 맞춘다. 두 번째 단계에서는 언어 하비투스, 언어시장, 언어자본과 같은 개념들로 이루어진 그의 언어사회학을 체계적으로 재구성하고, 그것이 ‘이상적인 커뮤니케이션’의 가능성과 불가능성을 어떻게 파악하는지 살펴본다. 세 번째 단계에서는 기존 언어학에 대한 부르디외의 비판이 갖는 인식론적 취약성을 지적하고, ‘상징폭력’ 개념으로 요약 가능한 그의 커뮤니케이션관이 하비투스 개념의 한계와 문제로부터 자유롭지 않다는 점을 상세히 검토한다. 논의를 종합하면서 우리는 언어에 대한 비판적이며 사회학적인 접근의 한 정점으로서 부르디외 이론이 무엇보다도 매개 커뮤니케이션의 변화하는 상황이라는 새로운 도전에 직면해있다는 사실을 강조할 것이다.
Abstract
Pierre Bourdieu presented some conceptual tools and interesting sociological arguments which could contribute to produce a new mode of thought on communication. He has especially reflected on the problem of language in a theoretical and empirical manner from his earlier researches. This paper attempts to critically examine Bourdieu's sociology of language shown in his major works. It consists of three parts. First, I discuss how Bourdieu attacked and deconstructed a kind of 'language-centrism' of important linguists like Saussure, Chomski, and Austin. Secondly, I try to reconstitute Bourdieu's theory of language with the principal concepts of linguistic habitus, linguistic capital and linguistic market. I also focus on Bourdieu's discussion on the (im)possibility of 'ideal communication'. Thirdly, I propose to reconsider the epistemological weaknesses of Bourdieu's view on linguistic sociology as a science and the shortcomings of his conception on the communication as symbolic violence. In conclusion, I would suggest that Bourdieu's theory of language represents a kind of culmination of critical-sociological approach to linguistic practices. I also argue that it needs to be renewed in a changing context of mediated communication.
