초록

이 논문은 부르디외의 종교사회학을 상징폭력과 상징재화 교환경제의 관점에서 재정리하고 문화･지식･권력사회학으로서의 의의를 해명한다. 그리고 부르디외의 주요 개념들의 종교연구방법론적 함의를 설명함으로써 각종 이항대립을 해소하는 부르디외 종교사회학의 유용성을 개관한다. 이 과정에서 오늘날 한국기독교의 사례를 통해 부르디외의 이론적 개념들을 재서술함으로써 부르디외 종교사회학에 대한 우리의 이해가 증대된다. 부르디외의 사회이론은 현대 종교적 현상을 이해하는 데 강력한 개념적 도구를 제공한다. 부르디외는 “문화사회학이 오늘날의 종교사회학”이라고 말하고 이를 ‘성스러운 것에 대한 과학(science of the sacred)’이라고 정의한다. 이에 따라, 각 장에서는 부르디외의 종교관을 일루지오와 상징폭력의 차원에서 개괄적으로 고찰하고, 상대적 자율성과 상징투쟁, 그리고 대규모생산장과 상징재화 시장의 관점에서의 종교장의 구조와 특성을 검토함으로써 장 이론의 종교사회학적 유용성을 논한다. 이후 종교자본(구원재) 및 종교하비투스 개념을 ‘상징재화의 교환경제’의 맥락에서 정립한다. 결론적으로 종교적 상징폭력의 메커니즘과 ‘종교의 이중적 진실’을 보여준다. 부르디외 종교사회학에 대한 탐구를 통해서 우리는 종교사회학이 단지 사회학 내의 분과학문이 아니라, 지배와 권력에 대한 분석과 비판의 중심적 방법론임을 새삼 확인하게 된다.

Abstract

This paper reorganizes a sociology of religion in Bourdieu in terms of the perspective of symbolic violence and the economy of symbolic goods, and explains its significance as the sociology of culture･knowledge･power. By explaining the research methodologies of Bourdieu’s main concepts, it outlines the usefulness of Bourdieu’s sociology of religion to resolve various binary confrontations. In this process, our understanding of Bourdieu’s sociology of religion is deepened by re-explaining the theoretical concepts of Bourdieu through the case of Korean Christianity today. Bourdieu’s social theory provides a powerful conceptual tool for understanding contemporary religious phenomena. Bourdieu states that “the sociology of culture is today’s sociology of religion” and defines it as a “science of the sacred.” Accordingly, these chapters discuss the religious and sociological usefulness of the theory by examining Bourdieu’s views of religion in terms of illusio and symbolic violence, relative autonomy, symbolic struggle, and the structure and characteristics of religious fields in terms of mass production and the symbolic goods markets. The concept of religious capital (salvation goods) and religious habitus are then established in the context of the “exchange economy of symbolic goods.” In conclusion, it shows the mechanism of religious symbolic violence and “the double truth of religion.” Through the exploration of Bourdieu’s sociology of religion, we reaffirm that the sociology of religion is not just a branch within sociology, but a central methodology of analysis and criticism of domination and power.
