Abstract

The purpose of this article is to clarify the speech of Alcibiades in Plato's Symposium in the view of ‘Plato's Apology.’ (1) It articulates some reasons of Alcibiades' failure which Plato intended to explain implicitly and importantly alike focusing on ‘the attempted seduction’ event. Apparently Alcibiades seems to give Socrates his sexual favor in order to acquire Socrates' knowledge and excellence but in fact it is revealed that Alcibiades' chief motive is the driving desire to dominate and possess him. In addition, Alcibiades' failure is not because of Socrates' hybris(arrogance) but because of the cognitive failure of the interlocutor, Alcibiades. (2) Based on the argument (1) it is necessary to reconsider the historical and public charges imposed on Socrates. In a sense the false pretension of eroticism(‘hybris’ told by Alcibiades) and Socratic irony are duplicated the impiety and the charge of corrupting the young. Socrates' hybris is represented as his superiority resulted into ‘elenchos,’ however, and the problem of the theory of education related to Socrates is not well treated in the atmosphere of ‘guilty by association.’(3) Through the results of (1) and (2) it is achieved the recovery of Socrates' fallen fame. For it is concluded that the reasons of Alcibiades' defection and blasphemy is derived from the political flaws in the Athenian Democracy that has agitated pleonexia, philotimia, and philonikos. It is never ignored the traditional opinion about education underlying paiderastia(boy-love), in other words that knowledge is transmitted by body. Therefore Socrates is not guilty in corrupting the young.
