Abstract

I argue that, to understand the debate between Socrates and Gorgias in Plato’s Gorgias, it is necessary to take into consideration the following two points: (1) Gorgias’ field of activity is Athenian democracy and (2) he is not an Athenian. Specifically, I first maintain, although he believes that rhetoric is a tool for achieving tyrannic liberty, he can merely state that it is a tool for persuading the public speech on what is just because he teaches future Athenian democratic leaders as a foreigner. Also, I claim, his status as a foreign teacher of future Athenian democratic leaders prevents him from denying a foundational belief of Athenian democracy (a member of this political system has an ability to do justice and then establish a democratic political system); thus, he cannot insist that his pupil cannot use rhetoric unjustly.
