Abstract

This paper claims that the dramatic introduction of Plato’s Republic requests its reader to remind of a contradiction of Athenian democracy, i.e. its basic principle is often violated to earn a profit. While focusing on the first letter of this dialogue, ‘katebēn’, many scholars have suggested reading this dialogue as a story of the philosopher attempting to tackle the issues of the visible. Yet, I maintain that the two premises of this suggestion, (i) the dramatic character Socrates is an example of the philosopher this dialogue describes and (ii) Piraeus, where he went down, is an illustration of the cave in ‘the allegory of the cave’, are not justifiable. In this vein, I argue that the very first dramatic introductory part of this work unveils a self-contradiction of Athenian democracy by stressing that Socrates went down to a specific place, i.e. Piraeus, with a specific intention, i.e. to join the festival of Bendis. I proceed further and claim that the following description of Polemarchus discloses this self-contradiction as well. Finally, by emphasizing that Cephalus’ house, where the main debate of this dialogue takes place, is a camp of the supporters of Athenian democracy and that there is a clear connection between Athenian democracy and the tyranny this dialogue regards as the worst political system, Finally, I maintain that, while reading the Republic, we have to try to find detailed analyses of the root of the self-contradiction mentioned above, which is hidden in the political and ethical arguments of this dialogue.
