타자화를 넘어선 서아시아 지역 정체성 형성의 여정: 이란을 중심으로

초록

19세기 서구 지정학적 관점에서 처음 제시된 ‘중동(Middle East)’이라는 지리적·정치적 개념은 항상 논쟁의 중심에 있다. 오늘날 서구 학계에서는 중동 사회의 고유한 특징과 중동에서 이슬람이 가지는 중심적 위치 그리고 중동이라는 개념 자체 의 적절성을 둘러싼 논쟁이 이어지고 있으며, 중동에 더해 한국에서 통용되는 ‘서아시아(West Asia)’라는 개념은 중동 또 는 서아시아라고 불리는 지역 정의의 복잡함을 가중한다. 이처럼 중동 또는 서아시아라는 개념이 가진 모호성과 불분명함 을 극복하고 적절한 범주를 정의하기 위한 노력 또한 나타났다. 본 연구는 먼저 서구의 발명품이자, 타자화의 대표적인 대상인 서아시아(중동)라는 개념과 담론이 등장하고 발전한 경 로를 조망하는 한편 마셜 호지슨(Marshall Hodgson)이 지리적 범주로서 중동을 대체하기 위해 제시한 대안적 개념을 살 펴본다. 본 연구는 또한 이란 지식인들에게 초점을 맞추어 서아시아 내부에서 바라보는 서아시아에 관한 이해를 분석한다. ‘동양’도 ‘서양’도 아닌 이란 내부의 정체성 담론 형성 과정을 살펴보면서, 이슬람을 바탕으로 한 주체 이데올로기의 형성 과정을 추적한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 서아시아에 대한 단편적이고 일차원적인 분석을 넘어 서아시아 혹은 중동이라고 불 리는 지역이 가지는 복잡성과 다양성에 대한 이해에 기여하고자 한다.

Abstract

The geographical and political concept of the Middle East, first proposed from a Western geopolitical perspective in the 19th century, has always been at the center of controversy. In these days, Western academia continues to debate unique characteristics of Middle East society, the central location of Islam in the Middle East, and the appropriateness of the concept of the Middle East itself. The concept of West Asia, which is widely used in South Korea, adds the complexity in defining the Middle East. In this context, efforts have also been made to overcome the ambiguity of the concept of the Middle East or West Asia and define it in a more appropriate way. This study first looks at how the concept of the Middle East, which was invented by the West, has changed, and analyzes how discourses on the Middle East as an object of otherization have developed. This study also presents alternative concepts proposed by Marshall Hodgson to replace the Middle East, and discusses perspectives of Middle Easterners themselves on the concept of the Middle East (or West Asia), particularly Iranian intellectuals. Furthermore, this study aims to demonstrate the process of constructing a distinct Iranian identity differentiated from the East or the West. The discussion presented by this study will contribute to a more detailed understanding on complexity and diversity of the so-called Middle East or West Asia.
