이 글은 아랍세계의 주요 담론을 중심으로 오리엔트에 대한 서구의 정치적, 학문적 개입과 달리 잘 알려져 있지 않은 서구에 대한 오리엔트의 인식과 대응을 다룬다. 그런데 이 약자의 시선은 오리엔탈리즘으로 대표되는 강자의 시선과 크게 닮아 있다. 와하비즘, 이슬람개혁주의에서 이슬람주의로 이어져 온 종교적 담론이든 근대주의, 아랍 사회주의, 아랍 민족주의로 이어져 온 세속적인 흐름이든 기독교 서구문명 대 이슬람의 오리엔트, 이슬람 대 근대성과 같은 이분법적 세계관을 상당부분 공유했던 것이다. 그리고 이러한 이분법적 사고와 본질주의적 인식은 오리엔트 지역이 분열, 폭력, 퇴행에서 벗어나지 못하게 하는 강력한 장애물로 작용해 왔다. 담론에 있어서의 서구중심주의는 새로운 형태의 제국주의를 배경으로 지속되고 있으며, 이슬람주의와 같이 오리엔탈리즘적 인식에 부합하는 담론이 아랍 및 이슬람 세계의 담론을 주도하게 되었다.
Abstract
Centering on the major Arab discourses, this paper explore into the oriental view of the Occident which is not so well-known as the occidental political and academic intervention vis-à-vis the Orient. Well, this subaltern view resembles that of the strong represented by the orientalism. Not only the religious discourses going on from wahabism and islamic reformism to islamism, but also the secular discourses from modernism to arab socialism and arab nationalism, hold in common the dichotomous worldview such as christian western civilization vs. islamic Orient, Islam vs. modernity. This dichotomous thinking and essentialist conception has served as a powerful obstacle for the Orient to get out of division, violence and regression. The eurocentrism in oriental discourses lasts in the context of new imperialism, and the discourses such as islamism which conforms to orientalist view dominate the field of Arab and islamic discourse.
