Abstract
Purpose or Objectives: This study aims to validate the psychometric properties of a self-efficacy scale for people with disabilities by integrating Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Rasch model. The primary goal is to confirm the structural validity and reliability of the scale within this population. Method: Data were drawn from the 8th wave of the second cohort of the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled (PSED), consisting of responses from 3,645 individuals to a 10-item general self-efficacy scale. The analysis followed a four-step procedure: (1) Construction of a correlation matrix and implementation of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA); (2) Model selection by comparing the Rating Scale Model and the Partial Credit Model using Jmetrik 4.1.1; (3) Evaluation of validity based on Messick’s (1995) framework, encompassing substantive, content, structural, and generalizability validity; (4) Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analysis using the Mantel-Haenszel χ² test.. Results: The CFA supported a unidimensional structure with excellent fit indices (CFI = .996, TLI = .995, RMSEA = .058, SRMR = .025), and both local independence and unidimensionality assumptions were met. The RSM was retained as the best-fitting Rasch model. Category thresholds increased monotonically and category probability curves were well ordered, confirming that the 4-point response scale functioned appropriately. Only two items (Items 2 and 3) marginally exceeded conventional infit/outfit criteria, but their influence on the overall scale structure was negligible. DIF across all examined grouping variables was trivial. Conclusion or Implications: The findings demonstrate that the Korean version of the General Self-Efficacy Scale is psychometrically valid and reliable when used with people with disabilities and is free from subgroup bias. Therefore, this scale can serve as an evidence-based tool for evaluating rehabilitation programs, providing individualized counseling, and assessing policy outcomes in the field of disability welfare. However, the addition of high-and low-difficulty items is recommended to enhance measurement precision for respondents at both extremes of the self-efficacy spectrum.
