Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of young adults with borderline intelligence in the context of their transition to the labor market and to identify tailored directions for support. Method: Secondary analysis was conducted using individual interview data from seven young adults with borderline intelligence. Thematic analysis was applied to examine their experiences. Results: Analysis yielded six categories, nine themes, and seventeen subthemes. Stigma and relational disconnection during school years hindered the transition from “information search → application” in early adulthood, while post-employment maladaptation led to short-term tenure and withdrawal. In contrast, self-understanding, peer support, emotional and practical assistance from family, and positive experiences during job seeking and employment enhanced the potential for sustained employment through the recovery of social skills and self-efficacy. Implications: The findings highlight that the job-seeking process of young adults with borderline intelligence is shaped along a continuum of life before employment, job-seeking, employment retention, and employment discontinuity, intersected by structural factors and relational resources. Based on these results, the study emphasizes the need to incorporate young adults with borderline intelligence into disability employment policies. Specifically, it proposes customized employment programs, integrated delivery systems utilizing peers, family, and community resources, and a long-term, multidimensional roadmap linking income, housing, mental health, and case management.
