Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore directions for changing vocational rehabilitation services based on the experiences of young people with mental illness and the understanding of vocational rehabilitation practitioners. Method: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with nine young adults with mental illness who had participated in vocational rehabilitation programs at five Day rehabilitation centers, as well as with five vocational rehabilitation practitioners. The interview content was analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: First, the difficulties begin with young people with mental illness being placed at a disadvantage from the start in the job market. While negative symptoms of mental illness and their ripple effects make job search and employment retention difficult for the individuals themselves, it was recognized that understanding and reflection on mental illness, along with appropriate social responses, are crucial for employment. Furthermore, employment for young people with mental illness is understood as a pathway to learning the attitudes expected of a member of society, a stepping stone to finding initiative, gaining confidence in recovery, and dreaming of independence. Practitioners also emphasize that employment is the fastest route to recovery for them and that tailored support appropriate to their diverse circumstances is necessary to achieve this. Conclusion: Viewing the findings from the vocational rehabilitation field through the lens of IPS's core principles suggests that policy and practice should pursue: incorporating them into government employment programs; transitioning to vocational rehabilitation that encompasses self-development and job exploration through education; and providing integrated services combining vocational rehabilitation with cognitive rehabilitation and mental health services.
