에드워즈에 있어서 성화의 원리는 경향성(habit), 전체성, 진정성, 및 지속성이다. 그리고 성화의 내용은 참된 덕, 아름다움, 사랑, 그리고 본성의 변화(겸손, 온유, 용서, 자비, 및 부드러운 마음)이다. 경향성은 본성의 원리 혹은 행동을 위한 토대이다. 그리고 은혜의 경향(tendency)은 은혜의 본성이자 거룩한 실천의 원리이다. 경향성은 지속적으로 은혜의 상태를 유지하고 은혜가 실천적으로 발휘되게 하는 힘과 관련이 있다. 그리고 은혜는 한 인간의 성화의 과정 속에서 전체적으로 진정성 있게 그리고 지속적으로 작동한다. 성화의 과정 중에 있는 신앙인은 참된 덕과 아름다움과 사랑을 이루어간다. 참된 덕은 존재와 아름다움의 기초와 원천이신 하나님에 대한 사랑이다. 에드워즈에게 있어서 덕과 아름다움과 사랑은 거의 동일한 것이다. 이 덕과 아름다움과 사랑은 전체와의 관계 속에서라야 본래적인 모습을 갖출 수 있다. 이 때 전체와의 관계란 철학적인 관점에서는 존재 일반과의 관계이고, 신학적인 관점에서는 하나님과의 관계이다. 존재 일반, 즉 하나님과의 관계에서 볼 때, 덕스럽고 아름다워야 진짜로 덕스럽고 아름다운 것이다. 이것이 좀 더 구체적인 현실 세계로 넘어가면, 겸손와 온유와 용서와 자비와 부드러운 마음이라는 내용을 획득하게 된다. 더욱 간단하고 분명하게 말하자면, 본성의 변화이다. 에드워즈에 따르면, 참된 성도는 하나님의 은혜로 인한 인간 본성의 변화를 통하여, 거룩을 추구하는 과정을 밟게 되고, 그럼으로써 점점 더 덕스럽고 아름답고 사랑이 충만한 성도로 성숙해진다.
Abstract
According to Jonathan Edwards, the principles of sanctification are habit, universality, earnestness, and persistence. And the contents of sanctification are true virtue, beauty, love, and the change of nature(humiliation, meekness, love, forgiveness, and mercy). Habit is the principle of nature or the foundation for behavior. And the tendency of grace is the nature of grace and the principle of holy practice. In other words, habit is concerned with the power that perseveres persistently the state of grace and makes grace exerted. Grace works universally, earnestly, diligently, and persistently in the process of sanctification in a man's whole life. Saints in the process of sanctification will mature the true virtue, beauty and love. The true virtue is the love for God who is the foundation and origin of being and beauty. Virtue and beauty and love are nearly the same thing for Jonathan Edwards. These virtue and beauty and love can possess a original figure only in relation to the whole. At this point, the relation to the whole is the relation to Being in general in the philosophical aspect, and the relation to God in the theological aspect. If something is seen virtuous and beautiful in relation to Being in general(or God), it is a really virtuous and beautiful thing. If it goes into the concrete realworld, it acquires the contents of humiliation, meekness, forgiveness, love, and tender spirit. To be short and clear, it is the change of nature. According to Edwards, true saint steps on the process of holiness-seeking through the change of human nature because of the grace of God. And so he becomes more and more mature as saint who is full of virtue and beauty and love.
