Abstract

It is widely accepted that Jonathan Edwards stands basically on thereformed line, as it is throughly God-centred. Edwards firmly maintainedthe historical reformed tradition, and at the same time he gave a sort ofnovelty to the historical reformed tradition and broaden its horizons byaccepting beauty as main concept and thinking aesthetically. Many scholars who studies Edwards, asserted that there is God inthe centre of the beauty concept of Jonathan Edwards, however, theydon’t tend to connect with reformed thought. However, the concept ofEdward’s beauty is best understood at the reformed tradition. The beauty that Edward said is approximately equal to excellence. In additional, it is very similar to harmony, proportion, relation, consent, agreement, love, and virtue. He has divided beauty into the primarybeauty (or spiritual beauty) and the secondary beauty (or natural beauty). The primary beauty is beautiful in relation with God, Being-in-generaland the whole things. The secondary beauty is beautiful in part only andworks as the image of the primary beauty. For Edwards, the foundation and fountain of all beauty is triuneGod. One alone cannot be excellent. Because triune God has the internalplurality and relationship, triune God becomes the foundation andfountain of all beauty. Furthermore, in nature, the beauty of God is theholiness of God. The beauty without holiness is not the spiritual beauty. This world has an imagery beauty that resembled beauty of God, asit is created with the emanation of fullness of God who is essentiallybeauty. On the other hand, this world also has an natural beauty ofbalance, proportion and harmony, following the rules of nature that Godhas arranged. However, Edwards thought that the most importantfunctions of beauty of world are functions of images and shadows whichcan show what the spiritual beauty is like. According to Edwards’s theory, it is possible for only true saints toexperience true beauty. Natural men cannot know the spiritual beauty. The reason is that only true saints could have a new sense of heartthrough the indwelling of Holy Spirit. This new sense of heart (orspiritual sense) enables saints to see the beauty of God’s holiness andthe divine and spiritual things. In conclusion, the theological aesthetics of Jonathan Edwards hashighlighted an importance of the religious affections towards God, byaccepting beauty concept in the aesthetic dimension. Furthermore, byconnecting beauty with holiness, virtuousness and love without separationfrom each other, it has given a clear directions of the religious practiceto us.
