Abstract

Those who define Jonathan Edwards primarily through the lens of eighteenth-century Trinitarianism, Puritan social ideology, or moral philosophy often rely solely on his philosophical vocabulary, failing to grasp the core theological intent underlying such expressions. As demonstrated above, Edwards’s ethical thought is most accurately understood when approached from a revelatory standpoint. At the heart of his moral theology lies the work of the Holy Spirit, who enables believers to perceive objective revelation within their hearts. This spiritual operation is distinct from mere subjective emotions or human passions; rather, it is a divine and supernatural work that operates in accordance with the Word. If revelation constitutes the objective principle of faith, then the essence of faith is found in true virtue. Edwards distinguishes true virtue from the mere outward acts that may arise from virtuous principles; true virtue, for him, is the love of benevolence directed toward God, which is ultimately reducible to a love for God's very being. In Charity and Its Fruits, Edwards emphasizes that divine love (charity) does not originate from within human nature but is the fruit of the indwelling Holy Spirit—a manifestation of God’s own love. Through this framework, Edwards advances an ethical vision from a macro-theological perspective, interpreting ethics as the glorious work of the Triune God in the history of redemption, as revealed in the covenant. The Holy Spirit applies the redemptive benefits accomplished by Christ effectively to the soul. Moreover, the soul’s transformation through the excellency of Christ and the Spirit’s work contributes to the fulfillment of the church, which Edwards sees as integral to the grand redemptive mission of God. For Edwards, the ultimate goal of ethics is that the Triune God may be glorified through the fulfillment of the divine covenant as revealed in redemptive history.
