벤자민 워필드는 구 프린스턴 신학자 중 한 명이다. 그는 잘 알려진 유신론적 진화론자이다. 다윈주의에 정면으로 반대하는 찰스 핫지의 입장에 비해 워필드는 다윈 진화론에 대해 보다 호의적이다. 그의 여러 저술은 진화를 긍정적으로 인정한다. 마크 놀과 리빙스턴은 워필드가 성경과 진화론의 권위 모두를 인정하는 대표자들 중 한 명이라고 주장한다. 그러나 최근 프레드 자스펠은 리빙스톤과 놀의 견해에 이의를 제기한다. 자스펠은 워필드가 진화라는 개념을 인정하고 있지만 진화론 자체를 받아들이지 않는다고 주장하고 있다. 진화론에 대한 워필드의 견해에 대한 이러한 대립을 해결하기 위해서는 복잡한 진화 개념을 명확히 해야 한다. 직접적 창조, 간접적 창조, 그리고 진화에 대한 워필드의 언급은 진화론에 대한 그의 견해를 밝혀줄수 있을 것이다. 또한 유신론적 진화론에 대한 현대적인 비판에 워필드가 동조할 것 같은 표현들은 유신론적 진화론자로 워필드를 분류하지 못하게 하는 단서가 될 수 있을 것 같다.
Abstract
Benjamin B. Warfield is one of the Old Princeton theologians. He is a well-known theistic evolutionist. In comparison to the position of Charles Hodge who directly opposes to Darwinism, Warfield changes his attitude to Darwinian evolutionism. His several writings acknowledges evolution positively. Knoll and Livingstone contends that Warfield is one of the representatives who opts for both the authority of the Bible and evolutionism. Recently, however, Fred Zaspel raises an objection to the view of Livingstone and Knoll. Zaspel admits Warfield entertains the idea of evolution but does not accept the evolutionism itself. In order to solve this confrontation on Warfield’s view concerning evolutionism, we should make the complicated concept of evolution clear. Warfield’s references on direct creation, indirect creation and evolution might shed light on his view on evolutionism. Also, the expressions Warfield is likely to sympathize with modern criticism of theistic evolutionism could be a clue to preventing Warfield from being classified as a theistic evolutionist.
