이 논문의 목적은 벤자민 워필드의 신학적 방향성을 연구하고, 그것이 개혁주의생명신학에 주는 신학적 함의를 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 필자는 워필드가 제시하는 신학의 실천적 특성을 고찰한 후, 워필드 사후 그러한 신학적 방향성이 잘 유지되었는가를 살펴볼 것이다 그리고 워필드의 신학적 방향성과 워필드 사후의 정황에 대한 연구를 통해 개혁주의생명신학에 던지는 신학적 함의를 드러낼 것이다. 먼저 워필드가 말한 신학적 방향성은 크게 다섯 가지 특성으로 구분된다. 워필드는 개혁주의 성경론의 대표적인 신학자이면서도 합리주의적 신학을 전개한다는 비판을 종종 받기도 한다. 하지만 워필드가 신학의 실천성에 대해 어떻게 강조했는지는 그의 신학적 방향성에서 잘 드러난다 실천적 학문으로서의 신학과 올바른 설교를 위한 신학, 참된 신학 교육을 위한 신학, 권위·지성·마음의 균형을 강조하는 신학, 신학교의 경건 훈련을 강조하 는 신학이 워필드가 강조했던 신학의 실천성이다. 다음으로 워필드 사후 이러한 신학적 방향성이 잘 유지되었는가를 살펴보는 것도 중요한 과제이다 워필드 사후 자유주의 신학이 프린스턴 신학교와 교단에 침투하게 된다. 오번 선언문 작성과 웨스트민스터 신학교 분리 사건은 이 과정을 잘 드러낸다 이를 통해 워필드 사후 프린스턴에서 개혁신학이 유지되지 못했던 것은 신학 자체의 문제가 아니라 신학교 운영진과 교단 내 목회자들이 자유주의 신학에 굴복했기 때문임을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구가 오늘날 개혁주의생명신학에 주는 함의는 분명하다. 워필드의 신학적 방향성과 워필드 사후의 정황에 대한 연구는 개혁주의생명신학이 앞으로 지향할 점을 잘 보여준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study Benjamin Warfield’s theological orientation and to suggest theological implications it has for the Reformed Life Theology. To this end, I will examine the practical characteristics of the theology presented by Warfield and examine whether such theological orientation has been well maintained after Warfield’s death. And through the study of Warfield’s theological orientation and the context after Warfield’s death, the theological implications for the Reformed Life Theology will be revealed. First, we will look at theological orientation that Warfield described in five points: theology as a practical science, theology for the right sermon, theology for true theological education, theꠓology emphasizing the balance among authority, intelligence, and mind, and theology emphasizing spiritual training in the seminary. These are the practices of theology that Warfield emphasized. Next, we will examine whether this theological orientation has been well maintained after Warfield’s death. After Warfield, the process of liberal theology infiltrating the seminary and churches will be briefly considered. Through this, it will be suggested that the Reformed Theology was not maintained in Princeton after Warfield’s death because it was not a problem of theology itself, but because the executives in the seminary and the pastors in the churches had succumbed to the liberal theology. Finally, I shall conclude this paper by referring to the implications of this study for the Reformed Life Theology. Through the study of Warfield’s theological directions and the context after Warfield’s death, I will present some points that the Reformed Life Theology has to supplement itself in the future.
