벤자민 워필드의 성경관과 과학관의 관계성에 대한 고찰: 인간의 기원 문제를 중심으로

연구자는 이 논문에서 올바른 성경관을 토대로 이 세상과 학문을 바라보는 한 예를 제시하고자 한다. 그런데 올바른 성경관을 가지고 세상과 학문을 이해하는 방식을 연구하는 것은 매우 넓은 주제이다. 따라서 연구자는 좀 더 논의의 범위를 좁혀서, 개혁신학의 입장에서 특정 과학 주제를 이해하는 방식에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이 연구 목적을 위해서 연구자는 벤자민 워필드의 사례를 분석하고자 한다. 워필드가 개혁주의 성경관에 따라 그 당시의 주요 과학 주제들을 이해하기 때문이다. 연구자는 이 연구를 통해서 워필드가 ‘인간의 기원’에 관한 성경적 대답을 어떻게 제시하는지에 대한 사례연구를 통해, 개혁주의적 성경론의 관점에서 특정 과학 주제를 바라보는 중요한 태도와 원칙을 제시하고자 한다. 워필드에 따르면 ‘인간의 기원’ 논쟁은 두 가지 문제를 중심으로 한다. 인간의 고대성에 관한 문제와 단일성에 관한 문제이다. 워필드는 인간의 고대성에 관한 문제를 중립적인 관점에서 다룬다. 그것은 신학적으로 덜 중요하기 때문이다. 하지만 워필드는 인간의 단일성에 관한 문제를 철저히 성경 무오성의 입장에서 해석한다. 인간의 단일성이라는 주제는 성경적 구원론과 깊은 관련이 있기 때문이다. 이러한 논의를 통해서 워필드의 태도를 배우고자 한다. 우리는 성경의 전체적 교리와 양립할 수 있는 과학적 이슈들을 중립적이고 열린 마음으로 대할 수 있다. 하지만 성경의 전체적 교리와 양립할 수 없는 이슈들에 대해서는 철저하게 성경 무오의 관점에서 접근해야만 한다. 이러한 태도는 21세기를 살아가는 우리에게도 유효하기 때문이다.
Abstract
This article provides an example of how people should recognize the world and science on the proper view on the doctrine of the Bible. To understand, however, the way to see the world and science is quite broad theme. Thus I would like to limit the boundaries of this paper. How to understand a specific issue of science on the Reformed Theology will be the field of this study. For the purpose of the paper, Benjamin B. Warfield would be discussed as a test case. Since Warfield was one of the Reformed theologians who tried to understand the major scientific issues of that day, it will be possible for us to find the way to comprehend the relationship between the Bible and scientific issues. I will explain how Warfield found the biblical answer to the question of the “origin of human beings” and insist that his attitude is also important for us to realize the way to perceive particular scientific issues on the Reformed biblical view. According to Warfield, the matter of the “origin of human beings” consists of two certain questions. The first is about the “antiquity of human,” and the latter is about the “unity of human.” For Warfield, the question of the antiquity of human is neutral one, since it has somewhat theologically less importance. The question of the unity of human, however, having theologically much more significance, is explained by Warfield totally on the position of the infallibility of the Bible. In other words, the unity of man is very essential to the concept of biblical soteriology. Through the discussion above, what I would like to propose is Warfield’s attitude. We can manage some scientific issues with neutrality, which are compatible with whole doctrines of the Bible. But if some scientific issues contradict with the biblical doctrines as a whole, we must approach them on the position of the infallibility of the Bible. Conclusively, this attitude also has great significance for us in the twenty-first century.
