이 논문은 존 웨슬리와 조지 휫필드의 칭의론을 비교한 것이다. 존 파이퍼는 톰 라이트와 칭의에 관한 논쟁을 벌이면서 존 웨슬리와 조지 휫필드가 동일하게 그리스도의 의(수동적 순종과 능동적 순종)의 전가를 인정했다고 주장함으로써 그들을 자신의 주장의 지지자들로 삼았다. 하지만 웨슬리의 칭의론이 종교개혁자들과 같은지에 대한 많은 논쟁이 있었기에 논자가 세밀하게 살펴본 결과, 존 웨슬리는 그리스도의 수동적 순종(십자가에서의 고난과 죽음)과 능동적 순종(일생에 걸친 율법에 대한 순종)으로 이루어지는 의의 전가를 인정했다는 글이 몇 편 있지만 그보다 더 많은 글들에서 그리스도의 능동적 순종의 전가를 부인했다. 그 이유는 능동적 순종의 전가 교리가 구원에 필수적인 그리스도인의 성화를 방해할 것이라고 여겼기 때문이다. 웨슬리는 최초칭의는 그리스도의 수동적 순종을 믿음으로 이루어지고, 최종칭의(최종구원)는 믿음과 선행으로 이루어진다고 보았다. 즉 칭의에서 신자의 역할은 믿음과 선행이다. 반면에 조지 휫필드는 시종일관 칭의를 그리스도의 의의 전가라고 믿었다. 그리스도의 의는 죄사함을 가져다주는 그리스도의 수동적 순종의 전가와 영생을 가져다주는 그리스도의 능동적 순종의 전가, 즉 아담이 순종하지 못했던 율법에 대한 순종을 이루심으로 하나님을 만족시킴의 전가를 둘 다 포함한다. 그리스도의 능동적 순종의 전가를 거절한 웨슬리의 관점은 명목적 그리스도인들의 삶의 변화를 촉구하려는 의도에서 시작되었으며, 이것이 톰 라이트에게 이어져서 믿음과 더불어 현재의 선행이 최총칭의의 필수적인 조건이라고 주장하게 되었다. 물론 현재 그리스도인들의 삶이 불완전하여 세상의 많은 비난을 받는 것에 대해 안타까워하기에 이런 주장이 설득력이 있어 보일 수도 있지만, 조지 휫필드가 주장한대로, 선행이 칭의된 자의 삶의 증거라고 가르친다고 해도 삶의 변화는 충분히 견지될 수 있음을 믿고, 우리는 계속 믿음에 의한 칭의를 가르쳐야 할 것이다. 또한 이 논문은 같은 본문에 대한 웨슬리와 휫필드의 서로 다른 해석을 비교했는데, 그것은 그런 본문을 설교할 때 개혁파 목회자들에게 중요한 도움을 줄 것이다.
Abstract
This article compares the views of John Wesley and George Whitefield on justification. John Piper made John Wesley and George Whitefield his supporters, by holding that both of them approved the imputation of Christ’s righteousness consisting of His passive obedience and active obedience, debating on justification with N. T. Wright. However, as there have been diverse debates over whether Wesley’s view on justification is the same with reformer’s, we need to investigate it in detail. According to this research result, though John Wesley acknowledged the imputation of Christ’s righteousness comprising His passive and active obedience in a few writings, in more writings he rejected the imputation of Christ’s active obedience. The reason is that he thought the teaching of the imputation of Christ’s active obedience would prevent believers from pursuing good works, or holiness. As for Wesley, initial justification is attained by faith in Christ’s passive obedience but final justification(salvation) is attained by faith in Christ’s merit and good works. There is the role of the believer in justification, which is faith and good works. In contrast to him, Whitefield reckoned justification as the imputation of Christ’s righteousness comprising His passive obedience, which is the ground to offer forgiveness to the believer, and His active obedience to God, which was not done by Adam and is now the ground to offer the believer eternal life. Wesley’s view commenced for the purpose of urging Christian holy life and is connected to N. T. Wright’s view, which is that final justification will be declared to the believer by his life of obedience as well as by his faith in Christ only. Of course, because today many Christians’ corrupt life is often criticized by the world, such a view can seem to be rather persuasive. Nevertheless, we should teach justification by faith in line with George Whitefield’s confidence that good works are the evidence of justification, not the condition of justification. Also this article compared the different interpretations of Wesley and Whitefield on the same biblical texts, which will be helpful when reformed pastors preach such texts.
