존 웨슬리 칭의론의 실천신학적 이해 : 칭의 교리 재해석과 한국교회를 위한 제언

전통적인 칼빈주의의 칭의론은 오직 믿음으로 의롭하심을 받는다는 이신칭의 교리를 가르친다. 기독교 전통 안에서 이신칭의 교리는 풍성한 신학적 의미를 갖는다. 그러나 이신칭의 교리에 대한 칼빈주의의 편협한 해석은 선행이나 성화가 그리스도인의 삶에 있어서 비본질적인 것이라는 오해를 불러 일으켰다. 이러한 칼빈주의 칭의론은 칼빈주의 진영 밖의 많은 기독교 신학자들에 의하여 비판을 받아 왔다. 특별히 존 웨슬리는 예정론 뿐만이 아니라 칼빈주의 칭의론을 아주 강하게 비판하였다. 비록 웨슬리가 종교개혁의 아들이며 종교개혁신학의 많은 부분에 동의한다 할지라도 율법폐기론을 수반하는 교리적 믿음으로서의 칭의론을 예정론과 함께 거부하였다. 웨슬리의 칭의론은 이신칭의의 교리를 기초로하여, 최종적 심판에서는 성화가 심판의 기준이 된다는 이중적 의미의 칭의론이다. 웨슬리는 믿음과 실천적 행함이 구분될 수 있으나 분리될 수 없다는 사실을 강조하였다. 웨슬리에게 있어서 최종적 칭의는 율법과 복음의 혼동이 아니라 하나님의 도덕법과 복음의 조화였던 것이다. 더 나아가 웨슬리의 구원론은 사랑의 관계 속에서 이루어지는 인격적 구원론, 관계론적 구원론이다. 웨슬리의 칭의론은 법정적 개념을 기초로 하지만, 법정적 개념을 뛰어넘어 인격적/관계론적 개념으로까지 확대한 것이다. 또한 웨슬리는 믿음과 행함이 구분될 수 있으나 분리 될 수 없다는 사실을 강조하였다. 최초의 칭의는 오직 믿음으로, 최후의 칭의는 믿음과 행함으로 받는 다는 말은 카톨릭의 행위구원적 발상이 아니라 최초의 칭의 이후의 믿음을 순종을 수반하는 진실된 믿음으로 바라보며, 행함과 순종의 열매가 없는 믿음은 진실된 믿음이 아님을 강조하기 위함이다. 웨슬리는 카톨릭 신학의 행위론적 구원론에 빠지지 않으면서 동시에, 인간의 역할과 반응에 대한 부정적 인식을 가지고 있는 칼빈신학에 대한 대안을 제시했다. 이러한 웨슬리의 칭의론은 성화의 삶을 비롯한 그리스도인의 실천적 삶과 한국교회의 사회적 역할에 관한 하나의 신학적 토대가 될 수 있다.
Abstract
Traditional Calvinist doctrine of justification has taught the doctrine of justification by faith. For this reason, for most Calvinists, good works or sanctification have been viewed as not directly related to salvation. This Calvinist doctrine of justification has been criticized by many Christian theologians outside the Calvinist camp. In particular, John Wesley strongly criticized Calvinist doctrine of justification as well as predestination. Although Wesley is the son of Reformation and agrees with much of Reformation theology, he rejected Calvinist doctrine of justification as a doctrinal belief accompanying the abolition of law, so called antinomianism. While Wesley's soteriology is based on the doctrine of justification, he also believed that sanctification becomes the criterion of judgment in the final judgment. Wesley emphasized the fact that faith and practical works can be distinguished, but not separated. The final justification for Wesley was not a confusion between the law and the gospel, but a harmony between God's moral law and the gospel. Furthermore, Wesley's soteriology is deeply connected to, relational soteriology in love. Wesley offered an alternative to Calvin theology, which had a negative perception about human’s ability to response to God’s grace. Wesley's doctrine of justification can be a theological foundation for the Christian life, including the life of sanctification, and the social role of the Korean church.
