언약신학의 관점에서 본 웨슬리안 성결론 —한국 개신교의 개혁과 연합, 성숙을 위한 제안

이 연구는 지금까지 국내에 잘 소개되지 않은 존 웨슬리의 언약신학을 소개하고, 그 구조와 특징, 무엇보다 성결론적 함의를 고찰하기 위한것이다. 웨슬리는 하나님께서 타락 전 아담과 행위언약을 맺으셨으나, 타락 후 인류와는 행위언약을 폐기하고 은혜언약을 맺으셨다고 가르쳤다. 은혜언약 아래에서의 두 시대를 유대교 시대와 기독교 시대로 구분한후, 유대교 시대도 그리스도의 중보사역의 온전함을 통해 하나님의 은혜로 구원 받는 시대로 가르쳤다. 기독교 시대에 대해서는 유대교 시대보다더 뛰어난 계시와 성령의 능력 부으심을 통해 이 세상에서 성결의 가능성과 필요성을 설명한다. 이에 비해 개혁주의 언약신학은 하나님께서 타락 전 아담과 행위언약, 타락 후 인류와 은혜언약을 맺으셨다고 주장하면서도, 율법의 요구를행위언약의 지속으로 해석한다. 이러한 언약신학의 구조는 이중예정론을뒷받침한다. 유기된 자에게는 행위언약이 적용되며, 택자에게는 은혜언약이 적용된다는 것이다. 또 행위언약의 엄격한 요구를 충족하기 힘들다는 논리로 이 세상에서 성결의 가능성을 부정한다. 칭의는 은혜언약의요구인 그리스도의 속죄를 믿는 믿음뿐 아니라, 그리스도의 온전한 순종의 전가로 이루어진다고 주장한다. 개혁주의 언약신학과 웨슬리 언약신학의 차이가 두드러짐에도 두신학 모두 하나님의 은혜로 구원 얻는다는 종교개혁 신학의 본질을공유하고 있다는 점에서, 언약신학은 두 전통 간 신뢰와 화합, 협력을가능케 하는 신학적 요소가 될 수 있다.
Abstract
This article introduces John Wesley’s covenant theology: its structure, characteristics, and especially implications concerning entire sanctification. Wesley dealt with various concepts of covenants, dispensations, and types of the law, following the outline of the Westminster Confession: 1. Covenant of works (applying to Adam alone): moral law as norm, obedience as condition of fellowship with God. 2. Covenant of grace: moral law as norm, faith as condition of fellowship with God. Under covenant of grace: a. Mosaic dispensation: moral law as norm, faith in ceremonial mediation, leading to obedience of the letter, as condition of fellowship. b. Gospel dispensation: moral law as norm, faith in Christ-mediation — whose authenticity is attested by spiritual, loving obedience — as the condition of fellowship with God. Wesley taught salvific sufficiency of both Mosaic dispensation and Gospel dispensation, and that under Gospel dispensation, God gives not only more excellent revelation but also outpouring of the Holy Spirit for sanctification. In contrast, Reformed covenant theology supports double predestination, identifying the demands of the law with the continuity of covenant of works, and then applying covenant of works to the damned, and covenant of grace to the elect. It also denies the possibility of entire sanctification in this life, insisting that believers cannot satisfy the demands of covenant of works. It also insists that imputation of Christ’s active obedience as well as passive obedience is necessary for justification in order to satisfy the demands of both covenant of works and covenant of grace. Reformed covenant theology and Wesley’s covenant theology coincide with each other in that they preserve the essence of the Reformation theology. So covenant theology can help dialogue, reconciliation and cooperation between the Reformed and the Wesleyan traditions.
