기독교의 전통도 either/or가 아니라 both/and의 문법이 적용되어져야 한다.

Abstract

The first purpose of this article is to articulate John Wesley's notion of Christian perfection. However, this article does not try to articulate his doctrine of 'Christian perfection only. This article presupposes that his 'Christian perfection' is related to his notion of 'simplicity of intention' and 'justification'. In other words, I will try to reveal the aspect of discontinuous continuity among simplicity of intention, justification and Christian perfection. Therefore, I will insists that the logic of 'both/and' rather than that of 'either/or' should be applied in oder to understand Wesley's notion of Christian perfection. In Christian tradition, the grammar of both/and should be applied. Christianity arranged the relationship between Jesus's Cross and resurrection through the logic of both/and rather than that of either/or. In early Christianity, the controversy about Jesus's nature was a serious thing. But Christianity concluded that Jesus is God and human being through the logic of both/and. It signifies that the grammar of both/and is a tool to understand the important aspect of Christian tradition. John Wesley experienced the first conversion in 1725 whose main point was the simplicity of intention. But it was a significant concept not only his early life but also his later life. Furthermore, it works as a important concept in his doctrine of Christian perfection. In 1738, his experienced justification through Martin Luther's commentary on Roman. Justification also became one of important concepts in his notion of Christian perfection as a metaphor of the branch of grapevine. In other words, Justication is a premise for Christian perfection. Regrading Christian perfection, John Wesley explains as a perfect love through the simplicity of intention and Christ's mind.
