Abstract
Using a dataset from Korean firms, this paper analyzes the relationship of family business with firm value and performance. In this paper, we define a family firm as a firm that was founded by a family, whose main shareholder is the family member, or the CEO or at least a member of the board of directors is the family member. Following such definition, our results show that family firms in Korea perform relatively better but have lower firm value. Examining the effect of family firms on firm value and performance, from three different points of view of corporate governance: ownership, control, and management, we find that agency problems driven from ownership structure are mitigated in family firms. The effect of family control and the effect of family management are proven efficacious. While large-sized family firms enhance firm value by hiring non-family CEOs, mid- or small-sized family firms show superior value or performance when they are run by family CEOs, just as the theories indicate. In addition, we find that succession in family firms has a significantly negative effect on firm value or performance, a result which is consistent with foreign studies.
