Abstract

Using data on 348 companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange, I investigate the relationship between family controlled ownership and firm performance based on agency theory and extends it by studying whether the family CEO plays an important role in raising firm value and performance. The main results are as follows: Firstly, family blockholder firms are not only more profitable than widely-held firms but also outperform companies with other types of blockholders. Secondly, the profitability of government blockholder firms is higher than widely-held firms, so government stake ownership is likely to contribute to raise firm value and performance. Thirdly, the performance of family blockholder firms is only better in firms in which the hiring non-family expert rather than family member is active as a CEO. This finding suggests that family blockholders have a strong inclination to pass managerial rights to descendants and this inclination may reduce business expertise and performance in Korea. In conclusion, family controlled ownership is superior to other types of blockholders in terms of corporate governance. However in terms of corporate management family control is inferior to the control of non-family expert. Thus, when firm leaders turn the business over to their offspring, it is better to separate managerial control from ownership and to leave the management control to professional CEO rather than to their offspring.
