Abstract
This research argues that the interaction with consumers on social media do not always lead to positive responses from consumers. This research focuses on the situation that a company delivers a message of expressing apology when the company makes a mistake, and shows that consumer responses toward the company would be different depending on media type delivering the apology. Specifically, when information provider of corporate crisis is the competitor, traditional media is effective since consumers tend to believe that the company has high responsibility for this crisis. But when the company has an initiative providing information on corporate crisis, consumers tend to believe that company have low responsibility of the corporate crisis. Thus, in this case, social media is equally effective as traditional media. This research contributes to expanding the scope of the research on corporate crisis management and provides practical implications of how to deal with corporate crisis to marketing practitioners.
